Summary/Abstract: The aim of the essay is to reconstruct Leon Chwistek’s views in social philosophy. The key point of reference for the proposed interpretation are Chwistek’s methodological assumptions, which found their manifestation primarily in his logical, mathematical and philosophical works. On the basis of nominalistic and rationalistic assumptions, Chwistek formulates the conception of pluralistic epistemology, followed by the ideal of ethical relati vism and worldview pluralism. They form the framework of social philosophy and philosophy of culture later formulated by Chwistek. The key categories which define his vision of society are “middle culture” and “high culture.” Chwistek was convinced that the cultural development of society is dependent on the relations between two social groups representing both forms of culture. His view on this matter seemed to evolve from the elitist one – developed in the 1920s – to the egalitarian one, which is to be found in his texts from the mid-1930s.
