Summary/Abstract: Croat politicians paid in a certain sense attention to Montenegro from 1878 to 1918 mostly in the context of a national integration. The major issue shaping commonrelations in the second half of the 19th century was differentconcepts of nationalism. Montenegro was one of the parts in South Slavonic area with unique tradition and as such it deserved an interest for many participants in public life. Political papers, press rticles, records of the Croat Diet, and personal reminiscences of the most eminent politiciansmainly showed positive attitudefor Montenegro’s struggle againstOttoman Impery. In that sense the National party underbishop JosipJuraj Strossmayerand his wingman FranjoRački gave a boost to Yugoslav idea.Up to the turn-of-the-century that political and culturalconception prevailed in spite of discussionconcerning territorial and religious issues. However, since the early 1900s some political representativesbegan to see Montenegro identity as a part ofSerbian nation. That attitudewas especially popular among the members of youth groups. In the eve of the First World War clandestine organizations shared the views on integralnation under Serbian leadership and they criticized king Nikola for not implicitlyagreed to subordinate his own views to those of the government in Belgrade. Yugoslav Committeewas established as a political group during World WarI with the aim to form an independent state of the existing south Slavic nations. On the other hand, pro-Vienna circles supported active Balkan olitics in order to protect Habsburg Monarchy. During the Great War they followed official policy to go to ar lso in Montenegro.
