Summary/Abstract: From 1861 to 1876, Italian diplomacy observed circumstances in Montenegrin from their Consular offices in hkodër. At some stage in the time of Montenegrin- Turkish War of 1876-1878 , special diplomatic emissary Mr. Cesare Durande, who was accredited at the same time as an Italian Consul to Dubrovnik, was sent to the Prince Nikola I Petrović. He was an expert in the circumstances prevailing in the Balkans, where he erved in various destinations as of 1986. He was engaged numerous times also as an Italian representative to international commissions. The major task of Mr. Durande duringhis mission to ontenegro, in the time of Montenegrin- Turkish War (1876-1878), was to gather information and to emonstrate friendly, well-meaning attitudes of Italy to Montenegro. When the Kingdom of Italy established its Legacy in Cetinje in 1879, Durando was appointed its first representative of the Chargé d‘Affaires rank. e served the duty until 1883. Over that time, Italian and Balkan politics was directed towards peace keeping, and also towardspreventing Austria and Hungary to expand additionallytheir regional influence after the occupation of Bosniaand Herzegovina. During his second mission to Montenegro 1879-1883), r. Durando contributed significantly o the implementation of such Italian politics. In Cetinje,Mr. Durando enjoyed the reputation of a friend and representative of an amicable country. He used to take pleasure from the confidencethat the Prince Nikolahad in him, since the Princeused to consultwith him on important foreign- policy matters.
