Summary/Abstract: Nexum was a contract of debt bondage through which a free man pledged himself to the creditor as a security for his debt. When a nexus was condemned by the judge after confessing his difficulty in paying the debt, he entered the condition of iudicatus which enabled the creditor to exercise manus iniectio and take him to prison (addictus). This paper examines the sequence of changes of the debtor’s status from nexus to iudicatus and then to addictus, putting emphasis on the legal nature of each status.
