Summary/Abstract: At the moment when the humble and the helpless find their place on the pages of Giovanni Verga’s books, their experiences have already been common place in literature: we come across them in Alessandro Manzoni’s novel The Betrothed, in novels by George Sand, as well as in rustic 19th century narratives.
