Summary/Abstract: From the History of the Romanian Orthodox Denominational Education in the Cetatea de Piatra-Protopresbyteriate (Chioar) (1850-1906). The paper deals with the issue of the Orthodox primary school system in the District of Cetatea de Piatră (Chioar), during the second half of the 19th century. The main subjects of interest are: the presence and the quality of the school houses, the selection process and the choosing of the teachers, the existence and the use of didactic materials (including school books). The conclusions point at the fact that the educational process in the given area and time period had been confronted with endless problems, caused by the government’s struggles to impose de extended use of Hungarian language, but also by the Romanian communities’ lack of understanding about the importance of the education in the process of maintaining the national identity.
