Summary/Abstract: In this paper, through a brief review of Chekhov’s oeuvre, with reference to the novella as a literary genre, the author points to the strength and acuteness of his writing, which is, in part, to the credit of his predecessors. Yet, Chekhov made a step forward, not only in terms of developing characters of ‘common people’, but also in terms of the status of novella as a literary genre in Russian literature, whose founder he remains to date.
