Summary/Abstract: The paper aims to investigate the concept of Moldovan identity within the Antony Smith’s theory of national identity. The analysis bases on two main distinctions that Smith’s theory makes between the civic and ethnic national identity, on the one hand, and the lateral and vertical ethnic community on the other hand. The description of Moldovan ethnic identity is made by reviewing the history of the Moldovan state, from Bessarabia’s annexation in 1812 by the Tsarist Russia to the independent Moldova after the disintegration of the Soviet Union. The paper refers also to the 2001–2009 Moldovan government’s measures for strengthening the Moldovan civic identity and their impact over the nature of ethnic identity of Moldovan citizens.
