Summary/Abstract: In Hungarian scholarship environmental history does not have a long tradition. From the 1980s historians started to discuss the problem of environmental change in the context of the early modern and modern period but specialists of the 20th century only scratched the surface regarding the history of environmental processes. Scholars working on the socialist period drew some conclusions about the use of water as a resource. These studies were mostly connected to the issue of the Gabøíkovo–Nagymaros Waterworks. Present article apropos of the edition of the Hungarian translation of John McNeill’s Something New Under the Sun discusses the fields of studies that are present in environmental history and tries to show some questions that could be answered with the aid of this research perspective. Through the study of the monograph of John McNeill two basic fields stand out none of which has been the main focus of 20th century research in Hungary; the first is how the different spheres of the Earth have been transformed by mankind and how mankind became a global factor by this time, while the second discusses which the prime movers were of these processes.
