Summary/Abstract: This volume of papers on culture, creativity and regional development is very welcome, especially given its attention to Slovakian and Eastern European cases and perspectives. In general, given a number of outdated assumptions in the regional science community, arts, culture and creativity have not been given their due as important contributors to regional prosperity, just as service industries were once given lower priority than manufacturing and extractive industries. In this short introduction, I make the case for arts and other creative activities as job generators, recyclers of local incomes, and important shapers of the sense of place and quality of life, features that help to retain current populations and attract others.
