Summary/Abstract: The attitude of societies towards intellectually handicapped people in historical depiction is the main subject of this article. As humanity, we used to aim at isolation and segregation of the disabled, we were afraid of them or sometimes we revered them. Nowadays, when we are learning more and more about the problem of the handicap, especially about it’s intellectual aspect and the humanitarianism has mitigated stereotyped perception of such individuals, the time for social integration with the disabled has come. Bringing help to miserable ones propagated since Enlightenment, has now become a social norm, which is reflected in society’s opinions concerning retarded people. However, deeper aspects of attitude towards the mentally disabled – our behaviour and standpoints, still too rarely follow such opinions.
