Summary/Abstract: Alessandro Manzoni’s tragedies represent an almost forgotten and the least explored aspect of the author’s oeuvre, because, for long time now, the attention of both the readers and critics has been focused on his novel The Betrothed, poetry and language treatises. The paper aims at presenting, through several theme units, his tragedy Adelchi, focusing on the characters of Adelchi and Ermengarda, as well as on the role of chorus in it. Since Manzoni’s tragedies are a fruit of his prolonged and thorough efforts, the paper also deals with his works on the theatre.
