Summary/Abstract: ACUTE INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION OCCURS WHENEVER THERE IS ANY INTERRUPTION IN THE NORMAL FLOW OF INTESTINAL CONTENTS. MANAGEMENT OF INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION IS AIMED TO PRIMARILY CORRECT THE PHYSIOPATHOLOGIC CHANGES CAUSED BY THE OBSTRUCTION ITSELF AND THEN, IF POSSIBLE, REMOVING THE SOURCE OF OBSTRUCTION. THE FORMER THERAPEUTIC ACTION IS ACCOMPLISHED BY INTRAVENOUS FLUID RESUSCITATION WITH INTRAVASCULAR ISOTONIC FLUIDS. EARLY FLUID REPLACEMENT PROVED AN IMPORTANT FACTOR TO REDUCE POSTOPERATIVE MORTALITY, ESPECIALLY IN THE ELDERLY. CHRYSTALLOID SOLUTIONS SEEM TO BE THE BEST OPTION FOR VOLEMIC INITIAL RESUSCITATION.
