Summary/Abstract: Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs), which are based in approach that offers online courses to great masses in an open and free manner, are a recent trend in distance education and are still under debate. MOOCs developed as an extension of the OER movement, changing and transforming in recent years despite retaining certain aspects. This research follows MOOCs, the buzzword of 2012, in an attempt to study the reasoning behind the recent questioning of their effectiveness. Additionally, the evolution of MOOCs is traced, and new MOOCs with new acronyms are portrayed.
