Summary/Abstract: Archival and library materials are mostly on paper as media. Paper is an organic, hygroscopic and porous material that has its life span and whose decaying process begins at the time of it made. Because of this, the paper is highly susceptible to physical, chemical and biological influences, but it can also be mechanically damaged as easily. Paper degradation factors can be external and internal. Internal factors are basically the result of poor quality of the material from which some document is made or the techniques of making it. While external factors may be grouped into multiple categories, the physical factors of damage (light, inadequate temperature and relative humidity, dust), chemical factors of damage (airborne, acidic pollutants) and biological factors of damage (bacteria, fungi, insects, rodent, human). Also, among the factors of degradation we include natural catastrophes and warfare that cause total loss of collections.
