Summary/Abstract: This essay deals with the problem of the public reception of contemporary art as an important issue in the process of cultural, social and political engagement of both the artist and the viewer. Contemporary art operates with a different kind of experience than art from the distant past— it requires productive reception or the processes of active spectatorship, in which the viewer becomes engaged in the process of art production and a participant in the cultural, social and even political actions. The challenges involved in the viewer’s reception of contemporary art were observed, detected and analyzed through the defi nitions and manifestations of contemporary art, through the analysis of nature of artworks and the strategies of conception and creation of its authors, their approaches in relation to a spectator as well as through the psychological and sociological studies of the perception phenomenon, as a signifi cant element in the reception process. The essay argues for the “new aesthetic experience” that breaks the traditional aesthetics focused on the “beauty” or “uniqueness” of the work of art – the experience that requires new modes of perception, new understandings of and approaches to reality, as well as the engagement of the cognitive processes, those of higher level of intellectual organization which often assumes the activated participation in the contemporary reality.
