Summary/Abstract: As a result of the proclamation of independence in 1991, for the first time in its modern history Ukraine could define its own path of development. However, the process of its defining has been spread over time. An independent Ukraine integrated in its state organism regions that cherished diverse political traditions, and this clearly had an impact on its political life and the process of defining its place in the world. In building its position on the international arena Ukraine has devised a specific model, a multi-vector foreign policy, which in practice was to be the answer to the challenges the country was facing. In the often this multi- -vector approach could be seen as contradictory decisions regarding foreign policy priorities, reflecting the hesitation of Ukrainian authorities in choosing between the integration of the country within the Common Economic Space1 and integration with the EU.
