Summary/Abstract: Sustainable development is often interpreted with reference to the World Commission on Environment and Development, meaning that ‘the needs of the present’ should be met‘ without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs’ from environmental, economic, and social perspectives (WCED, 1987). Scientific research is of course of highest importance when defining, elaborating and implementing policies for sustainable development, but nevertheless sustainable development is most of all a normative concept, rather than a scientific one (Abrahamson, 1997). It implies a moral duty to develop the society with an emphasis on improving the state of the environment, as well as socio-economic and environmental living conditions for present and future generations.
