Summary/Abstract: In this paper, the author presents the results of the qualitative analysis of professional and public discussions about a Project related to the revitalisation of the Riva in Split. This project won the fi rst prize in a public competition for the design and urban plan of the Riva. The analysis was based on the focus groups in Split at the end of 2005. About eighty participants, grouped according to their professions, were included in this research. The content frames of the conducted discussions are analytically presented in this paper. The accent is on the more frequent and discussed proposals, evaluations and opinions of the citizens of Split. Therefore, the author has stressed the importance of attitudes toward the Project and its social role in the current development of Split. Finally, the author proposes contents and forms for creating public opinion, as well as for the articulation of professional aspects before applications dealing with urban planning and similar aspects are invited. The importance of systematic planning of various sociological research is also stressed. Empirical studies would allow more relevant and consistent insights into the understanding and explaining of real social conditions and relations. In that way, this would create urban culture as the development strategy of Split.
