Summary/Abstract: This text is comprised of two parts. In the first one, the author makes a reference to the article by Łukasz Kądziela O potrzebie badań nad dziejami Targowicy (On the need for research into the history of Targowica, 1989) and expands on it with more recent publications. In the second part, he presents his own postulates for research into the Targowica Confederation and its myth. Despite playing a great role in the Polish national imaginary, Targowica has not been the subject of many historical or cultural studies. This confederation is typically presented as a Russian reaction to passing the Constitution of 3 May. The author calls for research into Targowica as an event from the late 18th century and into its myth in the 19th and 20th centuries. This would produce three outcomes: providing a new synthesis of the history of the collapse of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth, writing the history of the notion of betrayal in the Polish national imaginary in the 19th and 20th centuries, and setting apart the Targowice Confederation from its myth, which would allow for a better understanding of these two phenomena.
