Summary/Abstract: The study traces the activity of the Teutonic Order in Transylvania from the issuance of the letters patent of 1211 by Andrew II, King of Hungary and subsequent settlement to the expulsion of the Knights in 1225. It offers a detailed analysis of the causes and possible motivations for inviting into the Kingdom of Hungary the Order of Knights fighting primarily in the Holy Land. It also takes stock of the Knights’ activities, privileges, settlement policies, their work in building fortifications, as well as their military successes against the Cumans and in conquest. While relying on Hungarian royal as well as Papal documents, the author makes an attempt at explaining why King Andrew II eventually decided in 1225 to expel the Knightly Order from Burzenland by means of armed forces.
