The Concept of the Second Modernity in the Political Sociology of Ulrich Beck

Summary/Abstract: This paper discusses Ulrich Beck’s conceptual triad of risk, risk society, and global risk society in an analysis of the idea of „second modernity” („reflexive modernity”) arising from the breakdown of modernity in conditions not only of rising risks but of rising thinking and concern about risks, which serves but to render it even more exposed to risk.
