Summary/Abstract: The relation between school psychologists and their employers - schools, local educational authorities, municipalities, state administrations - is a delicate interdependence. Conditions of employment can facilitate professional practice or they can be very confining. How free are school psychologists to address all factors that might contribute to a child's academic or behavior problem? The answer depends to a large extent on their employment conditions. These conditions should contribute to the quality of School Psychology Services, but often they don't. School psychologists aim to act in the best interest of children, parents and teachers. In the eyes of some parents, they serve the school rather than the child. The author comments on the situation in Zurich, Switzerland. He discusses how employment conditions can affect the credibility of the profession.
