Summary/Abstract: Our analysis starts from the theoretical discussions around the emergence of a European public sphere and the correlation with its intrinsically related concept of public sphere. Given the great amount of literature on the subject, we have chosen to briefly point out the ideas that have impacted the most upon the further developments of research carried out in the field. Our goal is to demonstrate how EU’s current lack of intellectual leadership and political commitment is aggravated by the lack of (a) solid European public sphere(s) and consistent EU communication. The recent financial crisis that hit Greece is just an eloquent example.
