Summary/Abstract: The paper considers the role of the inner form in creating connotations of phraseological units. The material for the study were idioms with an inner form in the Russian, Polish, Latvian, German languages. The paper examines the phraseological units of different thematic and semantic groups and identifies the specificity of their inner form. The identical inner form of phraseological units in different languages predetermines an identical connotative background. Living inner form takes an active part in the creation of not only evaluative and expressive components of connotation, but also national-cultural ones. Idiom with the same semantics can have completely different inner form in different languages. National-cultural connotations are primarily those phraseological units, the component composition of which includes cultural-specific vocabulary, proper names, reference marks, as well as phraseological units with rhyming.
