Introduction In Amber Conservation And Restoration

Summary/Abstract: The subject is not new in the international literature, so it shouldn’t need an “introduction”. For the Romanian conservators the subject is not new, by itself, but special studies in the field have not been done. The paper aims only to make the first step forward. Doubtfully interesting abroad, it is rendered in Romanian, to be sure that at least some basics are accessible for museum’s staffs. The opportunity to make some homework, as well as some experiments, was given by the Romanit research project, leaded by the National Museum. The project is meant to establish the origin of the amber found in archaeological contexts from Romania, analyses being performed by some important laboratories from Bucharest. Troubles have been encountered in the process of tacking samples for laboratories, some beads with very poor conservation being brittle and broken apart, unless good care and good tools were present. Both consolidation and restoration were tried, using Paraloid B72, the paper being, first of all, a report on these operations. Some short conclusions have to be emphasized here: the conservation applied in museums, if any, resumes at filling the cracks with a resin, but there is no record of the kind of the resin, being difficult to correct FT-IR distortions; the storage rooms (frequently the exhibition itself) are kept dry, but this is a direct aggression on amber; the exhibitions have continuous light, that is also not for the best; the salted atmosphere is another danger, as proved by comparison made for conservation status for amber artefacts with provenance from seashore museums and all the others.
