Summary/Abstract: The paper intends to present a highly objective, and detailed image of Liviu Rebreanu’s attitudes toward Octavian Goga. In Ion Dodu Bălan’s critical study on Goga, Rebreanu’s name is mentioned nine times only, though never connected with any significant encounters between the two Transylvanian writers. One explanation for that is that the critic could not have any complete access to Rebreanu’s diary or to many of the theatrical reviews and articles that the novelist had kept writing on Goga for over three decades. Few echoes of the rifts between the two writers seem to be found in the diary and the superficial reading of Rebreanu’s articles on Goga show them being rather appreciative of the poet born in Răşinari. However, some of the entries that Rebreanu made in his diary are prone to shed a distinct light on the extent to which Rebreanu was inclined to lend ear to biased, gossiping opinions on Goga, whom he blamed for opposing his attempts to be admitted as a member of Romanian Academy. The sharp contrast between Rebreanu’s official, serviceable encomiums (which he contributed in his capacity as president of the Romanian Writers’ Society) and the rather harsh, biased critical opinions he obsessively entered on Goga in the diary invite a minute re-examination of the two writers’ personalities and aspirations.
