Social Work as a Tool of Assistance for Seniors in a Social Services Home

Summary/Abstract: The article deals with the definition and description of the specifics of social work with seniors. We point out the attitudes of seniors in social service homes in Slovakia to social work and social support provided to them during their old age. Social work affects the very quality of life of seniors and their integration into the active life of society. Aging is a natural process in which the entire bio-psycho-social--spiritual spectrum of an individual's life is captured. In today's busy times it is necessary to look for a new way of life in old age. The most common are changes in the level of self-care and also increased demands for assistance to the surroundings. According to the classification of a senior into a certain age group, a special attitude towards him/her is also necessary. The attitude of the social worker towards the client – senior in the process of social work and ethically, the senior can be authoritative, manipulative, protective and cooperative. A cooperative approach is the most appropriate form. It points out the positive contribution of social work as an instrument of assistance to seniors in Slovakia.
