Summary/Abstract: The paper offers a comparison of two approaches to the serious topic in the books “Oscar and Pink Lady” by Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt and “Through a Glass, Darkly” by Jostein Gaarder. The novels present identical theme – the serious illness of a child (teenager) with a prospect of fatal consequences in the near future. The books differ not only in the way their characters cope with inexorable reality. The author in her comparison touches upon the dialectic of life and death, as it is outlined in these texts, from psychological, social, ethical, but also archetypal aspects.
