Summary/Abstract: In the 10th century, Central Europe hosted a ”prosopographic scene” populated by monarchs, ducal families and bishops. Hagiographer Bruno of Querfurt recorded that Vojtěch/ Adalbertus (Bishop of Prague between 983 and 23 April 997, his death) was not only a proximus nepos of King Henry (I or II?) but also bore close resemblance to the ruler. However, that could have reflected his kinship with the ”older” Babenbergs from the 880s who, as Counts of Thüringen, had become involved in events in Bohemia (Strojmír as an adversary of Bořivoj I). While the Slavníks were not a branch of the Přemyslid dynasty, as it has been believed, the two families were closely related. Consanguinity followed the marriage of Polish Prince Mieszko I (of the Piast dynasty) and a Přemyslid princess Doubravka of Bohemia, contracted in 965. The bride contributed connections with the Slavník family. That may have been the reason why Adalbert took a trip to Poland and was welcomed there by Boleslau the Brave. Much of the speculation concerning Adalbert’s first and second periods of exile must be rejected; Adalbert’s church policy in Bohemia has been used insofar as ”reflecting” the general problems of the time (serfdom and clerical marriage).
