Summary/Abstract: The article throws light upon the critical ecological situation that emerged at the turn of the 20th century around the plant of “Ushkov and Co.” Partnership in Kazan. Based on the archival data on the manufactured chemical products and the enterprise’s impact on the environment and the health of the citizens, we explore the reasons of the ecological crisis and its evident and hidden consequences, such as the high morbidity of the population, the agricultural crisis in the surrounding areas, and the pollution of air and water.
