Summary/Abstract: The idea of “gentlemanliness” appears frequently in Jane Austen’s novels, being associated with notions such as “chivalry”, “knighthood” or “politeness”. Her books present the ideals of gentlemen that were publicly approved by the English society around the turn of the nineteenth century, but also the way in which these models interacted with each other. The article intends to reveal Austen’s conceptions regarding this topic by examining the manner in which she constructed the leading male characters in her work.
