“You Did Russian Historical Science a Great Favor…” (On the Correspondence between D.M. Petrushevskii and S.I. Arkhangelskii)

Summary/Abstract: In this paper, we consider the correspondence between the academician D.M. Petrushevskii and a historian from Nizhny Novgorod, S.I. Arkhangelskii. We reveal the course of Arkhangelskii’s study of the history of the 17th-century English Revolution; the difficulties in the publication of his translation of H. Pyrenne’s book; the peculiarities of the “provincial” historian’s work during the Soviet times; the communicative connections within the academic community of that epoch; the influence of Petrushevskii’s views on the formation of Arkhangelskii’s motivation to active scientific work.
