The Mistresses of Kazan Brothels in the Second Half of the 19th and at the Beginning of the 20th Century: The Portrait of the Phenomenon

Summary/Abstract: Based upon unpublished archival documents, this paper considers the age, social and national composition of the mistresses of official Kazan brothels in the second half of the 19th and at the beginning of the 20th century. The attitudes of the bawds themselves and other representatives of the city environment towards this kind of “entrepreneurship” are discussed. A conclusion is made that the real figure of bawd did not correspond to the image created by the official rules and to the traditional ideas supported by the literary and journalistic discourse.
