What Future Is In Store For Us? - Response Of Cybermatriarchy To Cyberpatriarchy

Summary/Abstract: This article analyzes the utopian potential of the cyberspace in general, and possibilities to realize the utopia of gender equality by means of new information- communication technologies. Subject of analysis were mostly textes of the English speaking authors and the Western/global society context. Among the key questions considered was: what is cyberutopia and how it is currently imagined? What is the other side of cyberutopia, i.e. cyberdistopia? Analysis of the latter from the feminist point of view, points to cyberpatriarchy as one of the crucial forms it takes. Further follows an attempted definition of cyberpatriarchy and its key aspects. The closing part of the article is devoted to the scrutiny of a possible alternatives to patriarchy, namely that of cyberfeminism, focused on the issues such as: What is potential of this philosophy, theory and movement to weaken patriarchy in virtual and real space alike? How new technologies should be used to make the feminist ideal, the utopia of society of gender equality, closer? In the conclusion it is underlined that the degree of feminist awareness and its presence, that is the knowledge of theory, critique and activism many feminist orientations in history brought about is a crucial factor.
