Museums In Serbia – Current State

Summary/Abstract: The survey entitled Museums in Serbia – current state was conducted in mid-2009 by Center for Study in Cultural Development’s team in cooperation with eminent collaborators from Serbian museums. In order to obtain a detailed picture, the extensive questionnaire containing questions about status, working space, funds and documentation, equipment, human resources, exhibitions, public relations, financing and priorities was sent to 92 museums in Serbia. By July the answers from 69 museums were received. Results show that museums in Serbia are facing different challenges, especially when it comes to modernization and upgrading professional work in reasonably bad spatial conditions and with lack of professional stuff. Regarding funds and documentation, results show the necessity to join forces and create common standards regarding digitalization of museum funds and documentation. An adequate legislation that will ensure solid planning procedure and open the possibilities of development especially when it comes to finances, is also needed.
