Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the "transformation - modernization potential" model developed in the author's research of civil society and used in the Czech - Polish- Slovak comparative survey "Strategies and Actors of Social Transformation and Modernization" (1995). Besides the interpretation of the cross-national difference in the survey findings, the focus is on developing the typology of citizens, based on the combination of the presence or absence of the partial civil potentials - measuring respondents' capacity to support processes of democratisation, privatisation of the state property and European integration. The typology includes two controlling measures - 1. the measure of the level of personal satisfaction with the outcomes of social transformation and 2. the measure of the capacity to take part in civil society processes.
