Summary/Abstract: Conservatism has re-emerged in Russian political discourse. It was largely employed by resident Vladimir Putin to re-assert himself on the domestic stage in the volatile post-election olitical environment in 2011–2012 and later to legitimise asymmetrical warfare against kraine. However, the conservative upsurge threatens the sovereignty and territorial integrity f ussia’s other neighbours as well. Moreover, it represents a normative challenge for the EU, nd one that requires a powerful answer based on a renewed long-term strategy towards ussia. Not the least, while helping President Putin hold onto power, the conservative turn oisons Russian society, undermines the country’s economy and isolates Russia from the rest f world.
