Summary/Abstract: The paper gives an overview of the quantified relations between codified variants and those functioning in actual use as reflected in Internet forums meant for parents. The paper also discusses how language users treat loan words which refer to new realia and which so far have no equivalents in Lithuanian. The investigation has focused on the use of already codified loan words bodis, pampersai and their equivalents glaustinukė, sauskelnės as well as not yet codified loan words referring to a variety of carrier-bags (e.g. for carrying children). The investigation has resulted in identifying that the loan word bodis refers to a particular piece of clothing for babies and its previous equivalent has not been adopted by language users. Therefore, smėlinukas as a more widely adopted variant should be considered. The word sauskelnės seems to be among the most successful equivalents; it has been confirmed by the usage tendencies in Internet discussion forums. However, it would be worth re-considering the investigation into actual use and identifying if the Lithuanian equivalent is more acceptable than the loan word. The creative power of language users and their inclination to use Lithuanian equivalents rather than non-adapted loan words (vaikmaišis rather than pouch or vaikjuostė rather than didymos) has once again attested to the importance of investigation into actual use for future codification.
