Universities and the cities: An economic perspective

Summary/Abstract: The paper presents an economic insight into the role of the universities and the interaction between the universities and the cities from the Middle Ages until nowadays. We analyse the traditional role of the universities and its transformation throughout time viewed through the prism of current criteria that are imposed on modern universities. The paper also focuses on the transformation and the role of the universities in the former socialist countries and specifically Russian Federation.
