Summary/Abstract: The article presents the results of longitudinal research conducted in the period from April 2001 to February 2003 on a group of preschool children. A number of aspects of independence were examined, including: self-service, ability of spatial arrangement, independence connected with execution of tasks, independence in social contacts and the ability to manage the child’s own emotional excitement. Children were subject to three tests aimed at defining their level of independence and identifying developmental changes. Research was conducted in three groups: children with an estimated high, medium and low degree of independence, established on the basis of selective testing. Based on the results obtained, the author drew up a profile of independence development in children, focusing on properties determining independence development in each of the groups under examination. The results presented in the article are a part of a doctoral thesis entitled: “Dynamics of independence development in preschool children.”
