Summary/Abstract: Legal English is a fast-growing branch of ESP in Croatia much in demand by both lawyers and students of law alike. Understanding the why and what of a language course rests mainly with the course’s participants. English for Special purposes and Legal English as a branch of ESP is no exception. The instrument for this is needs analysis. This study used a twelve- item questionnaire which practising lawyers and students of legal English in the undergraduate degree of law filled out. By analysing the answers and comparing them between the two groups, answers were given which formed a source of information on what stakeholders in the learning of English for law wanted and needed. This consequently provided directions for course development in the subject of Legal English offered by the University of Split, Faculty of Law.
