Summary/Abstract: Dimitrie Ghika, a noble descendant of the Moldavian branch of the Ghica family, was born on 31 December 1839 and died in 1923. He graduated from The Law Faculty of Humboldt University in Berlin. Later he became a distinguished member of the Chamber of Deputies and of the Romanian Geographical Society, royal advisor, magistrate, lawyer, and prefect of Bacau county. His exploratory fame is due to the expedition undertaken together with his son in the “Horn of Africa” (today the territory of Somalia and the south‑east of Ethiopia). as scientist, he compiled maps, made important descriptions of wildlife from the African continent and even discovered a new botanical genus. His entire work of explorer and savant was highly praised in articles and books published by prestigious institutions in Europe.
