The Actuality of Heidegger’s Notion of Production

Summary/Abstract: This article discusses the actuality of one of the main concepts of Heidegger's philosophy of technology – production (Herstellung). It is argued that Heidegger presciently foresaw one of the main tendencies of contemporary techno-scientific civilization – the establishment of the manifold and increasingly deepening tendency of the producibility of reality. It is shown that the notion of production is important for articulating contemporary and emerging technological phenomena on the macroscale (e.g. ideas of geoengineering), as well as microscale (e.g. synthetic biology): reality more and more becomes an artifact, while the human being becomes a producer.
