Reasons for Practice of Disciplina “Arcani” according to Catecheses of Cyril of Jerusalem

Summary/Abstract: This article discusses problem of motives for the practice of disciplina arcani in the 4th c. Church. The research that has analyzed the problem is differentiated. In the research several groups of motives are discovered – the historical context of that time and pedagogic and mystagogical motives. Disciplina arcani is revealed in the catechetical teachings and the mystagogical cathecheses ascribed to Cyril of Jerusalem. These writings of Cyril are one of the most important sources testifying to the existence of this practice of the Church at that time. Reasons for disciplina arcani refered to in these texts refer are analyzed. The article concludes that certain pedagogic and mystagogical motives are implied. This conclusion leads to the problem of the possibility of the cognition of the truth of the Christian faith.
