Summary/Abstract: Bulgarians from Teleorman county constitute and will constitute many years from now on, a spot of colour on the county’s map and a model of happy integration into a majority that accepts them because of their qualities.Their origins lose in the time immemorial. As the story goes, the Bulgarians followed by Turks took refuge in this area of Romania about 500 years ago, on a hill, which is called now the Plague‑Stricken Hill. The Bulgarian community from Teleorman kept, over the years, its traditions, customs and its old traditional costume. Bulgarian traditions divide in two categories: those which are associated to the individual’s life (birth, wedding, death) and those which are associated to the calendar, to the natural cycle and to the agricultural one.The life together of the Bulgarians and Romanians led to blended traditions and customs, to holidays that are celebrated together, so that there are a lot of similar things between them. During their almost 500 years of peaceful life together in their new homeland, the Bulgarian minority from Teleorman kept its affiliation to its forefathers’ ethnic group, they cultivated their language, their religion, their costume and their traditions.
