Summary/Abstract: Increasing the financial sustainability of the Bulgarian insurance companies that conclude motor third party liability insurance through reinsurance is a prerequisite, which will guarantee better opportunities for timely response and sustainability to unforeseen challenges in the insurance market in Bulgaria. The Solvency II Directive of 2016 introduces higher requirements for insurance companies in the European market for capital adequacy, risk assessment and solvency. Thus, they will be prepared for difficult to predict crisis situations that exist on the Bulgarian insurance market. The last such financial challenge is the implementation of the Bulgarian variant of the bonus-malus system in the practice of civil liability insurance and the interpretative decision of the Supreme Court of Cassation 1/2016 of 2018, which widens the circle of persons entitled to receive insurance for non-pecuniary damage from the death of a road accident to their relatives - according to the compulsory motor third party liability insurance. From this study it can be concluded that, given the great competition between insurance companies both in Bulgaria and internationally and the increasingly difficult foreseeable crisis situations on the insurance market, achieving the financial sustainability of insurance companies is unthinkable without reinsurance.
