THE EUROPEAN CENTRAL BANK - ANALYSIS OF THE INSTITUTION AND ITS POSITION IN THE BALANCE SHEET

Summary/Abstract: The paper features the ECB as the leading institutional financial unit of the EU. It investigates the links of the ECB with other EU bodies and the trends in the Bank's operations that affect its balance sheet positions. The role of the ECB in the EU is linked to the Bank's commitment to ensuring the stability of the EU and the Euro-zone through its balance sheet and impact policies in support of the Member States. The purpose of the paper is to examine the ECB in the institutional and balance sheet aspects for the period 2009-2018, thus clarifying its importance in achieving financial prosperi-ty in the EU and the euro area. The results show significant dynamics in the ECB's balance sheet positions for the period 2009-2018, with a leading role of the item "Mone-tary policy securities" in the asset and of the corresponding item "Other liabilities within the Eurosystem (net)" in the liability.
