Summary/Abstract: This paper defines and individualizes the concept memory of controversial events. After clarifying identity filtering and distortion of the information, as two phenomena which are specific to this kind of memory, we describe the relationship between the social memory and the social identity, and finally we focus on the sources of data distortion in the memory. We argue that a strong relationship and a reciprocal influence exist between the collective memory and the social identity, and, also, that the social controversial events activate a large amount of distortion sources, which affect individual and collective memory. Finally, we highlight the main characteristics of the controversial events memory, resulting from the specificity of the social events: symbolic stakes, identity filtering, attitude polarization, distortions in relating and interpreting facts, generating flash memories.
