Summary/Abstract: Since 1991, the living standards in Moldova have been decreasing dramatically. This reality is explained, largely, to the overwhelming corruption at the highest levels of power. The study of the social representation of corruption allowed us to outline the naive definition of corruption, as well as the mechanisms represented by its functioning in Moldova. One of our observations is that in Moldova, the corruption of lower level officials is, for the most part, tolerated. The functioning of corruption are explained by the following specific elements of the representation: fear of repression, fatalism, perception of the state as weak, atomization, holism, prevalence of unsubstantial immediate advantages etc. The study of the structure of the social representation of corruption shows a significant gap between generations. While very complex and dynamic for students, the structure of the social representation of corruption becomes, gradually, simpler up to a point where elements that indicate resignation become central for active and retired persons.
